How to spot it
Shine a light between the joists. Vermiculite is loose and granular, unlike fiberglass batts or blown-in fiber. Zonolite is one brand name MDH mentions. Until it has been tested, don’t store boxes up there or walk across it.
Typical cost in St. Louis Park
Not all loose attic insulation is the same. Vermiculite comes in small, pebble-like pieces of light brown, gray or gold, and it may contain asbestos. While nothing disturbs it, MDH says it can stay put. If you want it removed, MDH strongly recommends a licensed contractor, and that is the work we do.
We remove vermiculite from attics in St. Louis Park, Golden Valley and Robbinsdale.

MDH supports leaving vermiculite in place when nothing will disturb it. Plans for new insulation, wiring or a ceiling opening below change that.
The hatch is the first thing we seal, and the rooms under the attic get plastic next. A negative air machine runs the whole time the crew bags the fill, and every bag is sealed and labeled before it moves. The plastic comes down only after clearance air samples pass.
Clearing the old fill opens up a few next steps.
Once the old fill is gone, your insulation contractor has open joists to work on. Gaps around wires and pipes can be sealed, and the new insulation goes down evenly.
Planning to cut into the plaster or textured ceiling under the attic, say for a new light? Have that ceiling sampled on its own first.
If there is old ductwork up there too, our pipe, boiler and duct insulation removal page covers it. Every other service is on the home page.
