Popcorn Ceiling Removal in St. Louis Park

Typical cost in St. Louis Park

  • One room ceiling, about 150 to 250 sq ft$1,700 – $4,300+
  • Several rooms or one floor, about 600 to 1,000 sq ft$5,000 – $13,500+
  • Whole house, about 1,500 to 2,000 sq ft of ceiling$9,500 – $24,000+

A bumpy ceiling put up decades ago may contain asbestos. MDH counts popcorn texture among the ceiling finishes that can. After a positive result we seal the room, wet the texture down and take it off in sections straight into bags. You are left with a bare surface, ready to be skimmed, replaced or painted.

The state’s asbestos rules have applied to ceilings in homes and buildings of four units or fewer since July 2021. Under those rules, more than 6 square feet of friable texture counts as licensed work, so a small patch repair and a whole-room scrape can fall on different sides of the line. We take ceiling work in St. Louis Park, Golden Valley and Robbinsdale.

Ceilings we handle

Flat rooms

For a bedroom or living room, everything movable goes out first. Plastic covers the walls and floor, and a HEPA unit holds the room under negative air for the whole job.

Stairwells and tall entries

High ceilings over stairs need a rolling scaffold or staging. The stair treads and railing stay under plastic until the clearance test.

Painted or water-stained texture

A painted ceiling soaks up water differently from raw texture, and so does one with old leak stains. We check for both when we look at the room, since they change the work and the price.

Ceiling tiles

MDH’s list also includes older ceiling tiles. If yours test positive, we lower each one in a single piece when we can and bag it right away.

While the work is under way

Plan for the room to be closed for the length of the job.

Before we arrive

Clear the room of furniture, rugs, pictures and curtains. We take down or wrap the light fixtures, any ceiling fan and the smoke alarm.

Until it clears

Nobody uses the room again until the clearance air samples pass. The lab’s air-sampling report is part of the paperwork we hand you at the end.

What comes next

Who finishes the ceiling after us? A drywaller, a plasterer and a painter each want the surface left a little differently, so tell us and we will leave it ready for them.
