One room or one project
A kitchen or bath remodel needs samples only from what the work will cut, sand or remove. Add a room to the plan and that room is sampled as well.

Planning to open a wall, pull up a floor or replace a furnace? We arrange for an MDH-certified inspector to take small samples of the materials in the way, and an accredited lab tests each one. The written results tell you, room by room, what your other trades can work on and what needs licensed removal.
We book testing for homeowners, condo associations, landlords and builders in St. Louis Park, Golden Valley and Robbinsdale.

Before any structure is demolished, MPCA requires an inspection by an MDH-certified asbestos inspector. The inspector works through the whole building, from the finishes inside to the insulation on the mechanicals and the siding and roof outside.
We send samples only to labs holding NVLAP or AIHA accreditation. You get a percentage back for each one. In Minnesota, a reading above 1 percent means the material is treated as asbestos-containing.
Buildings finished after October 1988 are a special case. If the architect or builder writes a letter saying no asbestos went in, MDH takes it instead of an inspection, so sampling can be skipped.
No single Minnesota rule makes every homeowner order a survey before a project. These situations do call for one, though. Any demolition needs one. So do crews with employees, and so do public or commercial buildings.
If you hire a remodeler, their crew is covered by this rule. Any company whose employees will remodel, restore or demolish part of a building that may contain asbestos needs a qualified person to survey that space first.
Public and commercial buildings must be inspected before any renovation or demolition, no matter when they were built.
County inspectors ask for the asbestos survey and report when they inspect a property before demolition.
